Town Centers
Today

Pick a season or a holiday, take a leisurely drive along the local roads, and you will be rewarded by picturesque snow-covered Commons and window candle lights in winter; red, white and blue bunting and decorated bicycles for Fourth of July parades; and all the fun of local celebrations.

The Town of Shirley boasts an award-winning historic Town Common, and Freedom’s Way has many designated historic districts.  Most towns are historic although without official designations, and all have historic houses and sites.

The picturesque commons are still in use for community gatherings — traces of a few animal pens from the days when pound keepers rounded up stray animals can still be found, and some powder houses, too.  It is the firemen who muster, now, to hone their skills. Town festivals on the commons and in the centers celebrate patriotic holidays, apple blossoms, fall harvests, craft and antique fairs, and town events that serve food and provide games for children.
