Introduction

The history of the people who shaped the land to their needs reveals the region’s character. The emphasis of this theme is on the pattern of the American village and the continuing immigrant flow that contributed to its expansion and maturation. Resources include: architecture, town centers and early systems of self-governance, rural agricultural areas, and the old mill towns that grew into important industrial centers.
